Multnomah County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man after a string of home and car break-ins in Wood Village Saturday afternoon.

The Renton church was targeted this week. A spokesperson for the church says the campus was “covered with spray paint” and the “beautiful stained glass windows at St. Anthony’s were broken.”

The homeowners told officers they awoke to the sound of their front door being kicked in.

They are suspected of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to businesses, according to investigators.

Police says Bivens broke a window at Congregation Shir Tikvah at Northeast 24th and Sandy Blvd. on April 30th.

“My sister and I were sitting at a table eating and the man walks up to the window in front of us, looked at both of us and threw a ketchup bottle right at the window directed at us,” one witness wrote. “He looked me in the eye when… he threw the ketchup bottle at me.”

Hanshaw eventually gained entry to the home, telling Bergquist, “I need help. They’re trying to kill me.”

The Washington State Auto Dealers Association said the security measures businesses are currently taking are too expensive to be sustainable.

Another Walgreens in Western Washington was damaged after a vehicle appeared to have crashed into the entrance Thursday morning.

Both incidents involved vehicles smashing into the front of a Walgreens. The suspects in Renton unsuccessfully tried to steal an ATM.

There were 3,157 property crimes in the metro area for every 100,000 people in 2020 -- well above the national property crime rate of 1,958 per 100,000.

Threw food, paint and did other damage

Vanessa Daiger says in the five years they’ve been open, crime has worsened.

According to a neighbor who called 911, a person had exited a residence in the area with his hands up yelling for someone to call the police.
